Explore the history, culture and subversive possibilities of the humble t-shirt in this vibrant exhibition.
A canvas for everything from graphic design to political messages, the plain t-shirt offers endless possibilities for personalisation and expression. This show tracks the role of the t-shirt through the 20th century, from a symbol of rock’n’roll rebellion to a luxury fashion item.
Highlights include a private collection of Vivienne Westwood t-shirts from the early days of her Let it Rock, Sex, and Seditionaries campaigns, through to her most recent collections, Active Resistance to Propaganda and Climate Revolution. These items form a central installation, around which the historical biography of the t-shirt is mapped.
