Chronicling life in Britain through the rapidly evolving 20th century, Sickert produced an unapologetic body of work that highlighted raw human experience.

This exhibition is the largest retrospective of the artist’s work in the UK for over 30 years and includes 300 paintings and drawings, many from Walker Art Gallery’s own collection, the largest Sickert collection in the world.

Sickert was a radical 20th century painter who was drawn to the messy realness of society. He was often inspired by music halls, theatrical life and urban scenes, and was one of the first artists to work from photographs.

The works in this exhibition are on display together for the first time, exploring the significant role drawing played Sickert’s practice. The images will chart the unapologetic attitude to painting real life of an artist who was constantly reinventing himself.
