Over 250 objects, including new acquisitions from a major public call-out, highlight the creativity of African fashion creatives and the global influence of diasporic trends over a 70 year period.

Celebrating the originality and variety of African fashion designers in the wake of the continent’s liberation through to the present day, this major exhibition at the V&A has been two years in development. Preparations for the showcase included a call out for rare designs, family portraits from the liberation years and pieces of clothing connected to personal stories, acquisitions that now sit alongside photographs and textiles from the museum’s pre-existing collections.

Exploring the vibrancy and far-reaching influence of the continent’s fashion scene, Africa Fashion highlights a wellspring of creativity and innovation despite centuries of colonisation and political shifts. The exhibition reveals the role of music and art in Africa’s cultural renaissance, diasporic fashion trends, and the ground-breaking work of a new generation of stylists, designers and photographers across Africa. Africa Fashion demonstrates how these creatives are transforming global fashions.
