Commissioned by ironmaster William Crawshay II to overlook his ironworks, Cyfarthfa is the most impressive monument of the industrial 'Iron Age' in South Wales.
The collections cover Merthyr's rich social and industrial history. There are also ceramics, Egyptology, natural history and an art collection including works by Penry Williams, the 'Welsh Turner'.
