Located in the Grade II listed Town Hall, the Museum of Oxford is the only museum dedicated to telling the story of the city and its people.

The museum is currently undergoing a major redevelopment that will triple its size and hugely increase the number of exhibits on show when it fully reopens in summer 2020.

Meanwhile, a Micro-Museum holds temporary exhibitions where visitors can learn about the history of Oxford and its communities, and various events are on offer at different locations across the city.

What to see at the Museum of Oxford

The Museum of Oxford’s collection boasts an eclectic array of archaeological and social history objects.

From the grave slab of a Saxon princess to an Oxford marmalade tin found in Antarctica, and from an Oliver Cromwell death mask to a medal awarded to the woman who once inspired Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the collection brings alive the area’s fascinating and sometimes startling stories.

Don't miss

Catch a sneak preview of what’s in store when the new museum opens by visiting one of the community-led exhibitions at the Micro-Museum. Much on display is centred around oral histories and objects donated directly from the people of Oxfordshire.

Tell me something I don't know

The museum is currently crowdfunding through Art Happens to raise funds for an exhibition that will be at the centre of the new museum, displaying intriguing objects from Oxford’s pubs and breweries to help tell the story of the city.

Oxford’s pubs and breweries are a rich part of the city’s history, and the new permanent display will bring together historical objects with the memories and stories of locals.
