Bringing five centuries of communications history to life, London's newest museum tells the surprising story of Britain's postal heritage.

Holding over 380 years' worth of records, 60,000 objects and millions of stamps, the museum explores the history of the postal service since Henry VIII first wanted a network to serve his court in the 16th century to its relevance in today's technological age.

Visitors can explore the collections and temporary exhibitions, discovering everything from the rare Penny Black – the world's first adhesive postage stamp – to cryptic Victorian Valentine cards. Immersive activities include fending off highwaymen in the mail coach game and sending secret messages across the room in pneumatic cannisters.

There is also the opportunity to ride on Mail Rail, a theatrical experience in the original tunnels and station platforms underneath Royal Mail's Mount Pleasant sorting office.

The Postal Museum was shortlisted for Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2018.

Please note: a ride on Mail Rail is available for National Art Pass holders at the top up price of £6.25.

In episode two of our new podcast Meet Me at the Museum, Phil Wang and Pierre Novellie visit The Postal Museum.

Measures are in place to ensure the museum is a safe and fun place for visitors, staff and volunteers. You can see some of the measures in place at the top of this page.

We have adapted the Mail Rail trains so that groups that choose to sit together are divided by safety screens. We have also adapted many of the things you can touch and use in the galleries, to make them safer.

Changes include proximity sensors instead of buttons, more hand sanitisation points and free stylus pencils to use on touch screens.

As the museum is an enclosed, indoor space, in line with government guidance all visitors, staff and volunteers are expected to wear face coverings inside the museum, unless medically exempt.
