Tredegar House is one of the finest Restoration period buildings in Wales, with beautiful formal gardens in 90 acres of parkland.
It was the home of the Morgan Family, a wealthy and powerful family who later became Lords Tredegar. Packed with tales of tragic ends, eccentric big spenders and famous philanthropists, there's plenty of juicy history to keep your imagination occupied. One of our favourites is the colourful character Evan, who along with hosting scandalous parties collected a menagerie of animals which included Blue Boy the parrot, Alice the bear and Somerset the boxing kangaroo.
Permanent collection
The family sold the house and contents in the 1950s to the Catholic Church and when Newport Borough Council bought the property in the 1974 many original objects were included in the sale, others are kindly loaned to the estate. A visit to the House explores 'below stairs' where the servants worked, not just the impressive State Rooms where the Morgans entertained. Objects and portraits from the family's interesting history tell their story well.
